How Many Times A Day Should I Wash My Face?
This is one of the top questions I get asked and today I’m here to give an in depth explanation on the Dos & Dont’s of Face Washing.
First off, remember that washing your face is totally dependent on your skin type.
Someone who has oily skin doesn’t need to wash their face in the same way as someone who has dry skin or has a compromised skin barrier. Below I’m going to walk you through the best practices for face washing when it comes to your skin type.
BUT before we get there, I do want to point out the Biggest, Most Important Rule of them all……. Let’s just call this the GOLDEN RULE OF FACE WASHING.
DO NOT WASH YOUR FACE MORE THAN TWICE A DAY.
Once you start washing your face three or four times a day, you begin to remove the healthy oils on your skin that make up your acid mantle. Whoa - science term - let me explain….
Your acid mantle is the very fine, slightly acidic film on the surface of all the skin that acts as a barrier to bacteria, viruses, and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin. Sebum is secreted by the sebaceous gland (in your pore) and when mixed with sweat becomes the acid mantle. So, when your acid mantle breaks down your skin let’s all bacteria in and leads to breakouts or worse, sensitized skin.
Another important tidbit about washing your face is to remember to always wash it at night! Removing all the dirt, bacteria, and oil buildup that has accumulated during the day will help keep skin balanced and functioning well no matter your skin type.
Are you a person who washing your face more than twice a day? If you feel like you need a facial refresh during the day (think post-workout) I suggest instead of fully cleansing again, try a toner. While our Jasmine and Rose Toner is a great option you can use any toner as long as it’s slightly astringent (but not drying, avoid witch hazel) so it can lift away that excess dirt or oil that needs to be lifted away.
Cleansing Routine for DRY/SENSITIVE or COMPROMISED SKIN:
At Night: Create an evening routine that includes cleansing with a mild, moisturizing and fragrance free cleanser. I suggest our Carrot and Sweet Potato or Geranium and Rose Clay bar soaps. Follow this up with a gentle toner and hydrating moisturizer. I suggest our Jasmine and Rose Toner followed by our Herbal Skin Food Moisturizer.
A simple three step PM routine to cleanse, balance and hydrate.
During the Day: Skip cleansing and instead go straight to toner, for light astringent properties and hydration. Follow with moisturizer and SPF (I personally love the Skin Tint from ilia beauty with SPF 40 and/or SuperGoop’s Powder SPF45).
Cleansing Routine for OILY SKIN:
Double cleansing may be the right call here. This is oil cleansing followed by traditional cleansing with water.
The idea behind oil cleansing is pretty simple. Oil breaks down oil without stripping the natural moisture barrier. Oil cleansing also does a good job of removing heavy make-up or sunscreen. Simply massage a non-comedogenic oil (plain rosehip/grapeseed or our Whole Body Oil) into skin for 1 minutes (should feel like makeup has melted off), wipe away and cleanse skin as normal with cleanser, we suggest Chamomile and Clay Face Soap.
PM: Double Cleanse, followed by evening routine, we suggest our Jasmine and Rose Toner followed by the Herbal Skin Food Moisturizer.
AM: Single cleanse with water, followed by morning routine, we suggest Jasmine and Rose Toner, Herbal Skin Food Moisturizer, SPF
Also once a week you should work in a treatment mask at night (after cleansing, before toner) to make sure oil production is balanced and pores are properly being exfoliated. We suggest our Dead Sea Clay Face Mask or Herbivore Blue Tansy Mask with AHA’s and BHA’s.
Cleansing Routine for ACNE PRONE SKIN:
First off, know that breakouts are totally normal. And whenever they happen, it’s your skin trying to tell you something. There’s no simple rule when it comes to acne prone skin, mostly because your skin may be prone to acne for a number of reasons. Try out a few different methods (give it at least a week) to decide what might be right for your skin.
Does your skin love oil cleansing alone (covered above)? Does it love double cleansing (covered above)? Or is it a fan of once nightly cleansing with the Chamomile and Clay Face Soap and skipping right to toner in the morning? This is going to take a week of trying it out and deciding.. Listen to your skin and remember you always have a skin friend in me.
